Introduction to AI Safety, Ethics, and Society

Hendrycks, Dan

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly embedding itself within militaries, economies, and societies, reshaping their very foundations. Given the depth and breadth of its consequences, it has never been more pressing to understand how to ensure that AI systems are safe, ethical, and have a positive societal impact. This book aims to provide a comprehensive approach to understanding AI risk. Our primary goals include consolidating fragmented knowledge on AI risk, increasing the precision of core ideas, and reducing barriers to entry by making content simpler and more comprehensible. The book has been designed to be accessible to readers from diverse backgrounds. You do not need to have studied AI, philosophy, or other such topics. The content is skimmable and somewhat modular, so that you can choose which chapters to read. We introduce mathematical formulas in a few places to specify claims more precisely, but readers should be able to understand the main points without these.

South Korea's Nationwide Effort for AI Semiconductor Industry

Communications of the ACM

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the world's leading memory semiconductor companies, have launched investment and employment plans for their AI semiconductor and foundry businesses. Samsung Electronics is trying to develop next-generation AI semiconductor products by leveraging its strengths in mobile chipset design and memory manufacturing. Samsung develops its own neural processing units (NPUs) and integrates them into multiple processing platforms, including the Exynos mobile processor and the Exynos auto processor series. Once secretly focusing solely on their own product development, major companies are starting to open up relations with the academia and research communities to learn the latest AI technologies and engage with well-educated researchers. Another notable product development direction is putting AI computation logic into memories.

Tips for Scholarly Research Publication

#artificialintelligence

Here are some of my learnings that you might find useful to reduce stress that comes with publishing. To draw an analogy, I think starting a startup company and the PhD publication process have a few things in common. Both have an uncertain future initially, but both could result in a novel contribution in their respective areas in the end. Just like a startup, your publication process needs a survey, vision, strategy, iterations, and scaling. My thoughts are organized below in the same sequence.

Robots: stealing our jobs or solving labour shortages?

The Guardian

As the coronavirus pandemic enveloped the world last year, businesses increasingly turned to automation in order to address rapidly changing conditions. Floor-cleaning and microbe-zapping disinfecting robots were introduced in hospitals, supermarkets and other environments. Some enterprises found that, given the new emphasis on hygiene and social distancing, robotic operations offered a marketing advantage. The American fast food chain White Castle began using hamburger-cooking robots in an effort to create "an avenue for reduced human contact with food during the cooking process". With the worst days of the pandemic hopefully now behind us, the jobs story has turned out to be unexpectedly complicated. While overall unemployment rates remain elevated, both the US and the UK are experiencing widespread worker shortages, focused especially in those occupations that tend to offer gruelling work conditions and relatively low pay.

Scientists develop AI to predict the success of startup companies

#artificialintelligence

A study in which machine-learning models were trained to assess over 1 million companies has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) can accurately determine whether a startup firm will fail or become successful. The outcome is a tool, Venhound, that has the potential to help investors identify the next unicorn. It is well known that around 90% of startups are unsuccessful: Between 10% and 22% fail within their first year, and this presents a significant risk to venture capitalists and other investors in early-stage companies. In a bid to identify which companies are more likely to succeed, researchers have developed machine-learning models trained on the historical performance of over 1 million companies. Their results, published in KeAi's The Journal of Finance and Data Science, show that these models can predict the outcome of a company with up to 90% accuracy.
